A practical way to compare fees, curriculum and campus location before you commit to a 10-year MM2H home.
If you’re relocating on MM2H with children, it usually pays to shortlist international schools in Kuala Lumpur before you choose a home. Under the current MM2H guidelines, the qualifying residence can’t be sold for 10 years unless you upgrade to a higher-value one. A home picked before the school is checked can leave you with the wrong pathway, no place in your child’s year group, or a long daily school run.
At Hartamas International, we help families line up the MM2H route with where daily life will actually work. Below, we compare five schools on 2026/27 fees, campuses and enrolment timing, for parents across Asia planning a family move.
TL;DR: Quick Summary
- Shortlist schools before homes: the MM2H home generally can’t be sold for 10 years, so school geography is worth testing first.
- MM2H children can study in Malaysia: the guidelines allow dependants to study in Malaysia, and schools such as ISKL and M’KIS name MM2H families in their admissions or fee policies, though each school runs its own document checks.
- Published tuition varies widely: across the five schools compared, 2026/27 fees run from about RM36,500 to RM143,400 a year (before SST)
- Year one costs more than tuition: application, registration, deposits and language support can add tens of thousands of ringgit.
- Same neighbourhood, different pathways: GIS and M’KIS are both in Mont Kiara, but one is British-led and the other offers a full IB continuum.
- Rolling admission isn’t a guaranteed place: some year groups are already limited, wait-pooled or closed, so check your child’s exact year.

Why Should MM2H Families Shortlist International Schools in Kuala Lumpur Before Buying a Home?
MM2H families benefit from shortlisting schools first because the qualifying home is a long-term commitment and the school run is a daily one.
The MM2H guidelines allow dependants to pursue their education in Malaysia, and several international schools, including ISKL and M’KIS, name MM2H families in their admissions or fee policies. The guidelines also make it compulsory to buy and own a residence after approval. Selling it isn’t allowed for 10 years, unless you’re upgrading to a higher-value home.
That doesn’t mean the school should decide everything. Work, healthcare, lifestyle and your property budget all still need to fit. But school geography is far easier to test before you’ve committed to an area than after.
If you’re still working through the programme itself, our guide to current MM2H requirements covers the full picture.

Should MM2H families choose the school before buying property? Usually, it helps to confirm several realistic school options before committing to a residential area. Curriculum, place availability and campus location shape daily family life, while the qualifying MM2H property generally can’t be sold for 10 years unless you upgrade to a higher-value home. |

Pro Tip: we’d suggest naming at least two realistic schools before you shortlist a single property. |

What Should You Decide About Your Child Before Comparing Schools?
Your child’s year group, current curriculum and likely next destination narrow the school list faster than any ranking can.
Before you compare school names, we’d encourage you to answer five questions:
- Which year or grade will your child enter?
- What curriculum are they coming from?
- Where are they likely to study after Malaysia?
- When do you want them to start?
- How much is your realistic first-year education budget?
For families moving from Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong or mainland China, curriculum transition usually deserves more attention than prestige. No pathway is automatically better. It depends on where your child is heading next.
- British-route families: may value continuity into IGCSE and A Levels.
- Families wanting a full IB pathway: may narrow the list to schools offering PYP, MYP and the Diploma Programme.
- Older students: those near IGCSE, A Levels, IB or university applications need more careful transition planning.
One honest note from us: we don’t judge which school suits your child academically. That conversation belongs with each school’s admissions team.
|
Pro Tip: ask each school how it handles students joining from your child’s current curriculum at their exact year group. |

How Do Five International Schools in Kuala Lumpur Compare on 2026/27 Fees?
Five Klang Valley schools show how curriculum, campus and cost can differ, even within the same neighbourhood.
This isn’t a ranking. These schools are decision anchors across four school clusters, chosen to show the trade-offs you’re likely to face.

There’s no winner in this table. Three things stand out instead:
- Same location doesn’t mean the same education: GIS and M’KIS are both in Mont Kiara, yet one is British-led and the other offers a full IB continuum.
- Tuition isn’t your first-year cost: application, registration, deposits, language support and transport can lift year-one spending well above tuition.
- Exact year group matters: comparing one school’s nursery fee with another’s secondary fee will distort your budget.
|
Pro Tip: compare fees for the year group your child will actually join, then check how they rise over the years you expect to stay. |

What Does an International School in Kuala Lumpur Really Cost in Year One?
Your first-year school cost is usually tuition plus several one-off charges, while later years settle closer to tuition plus recurring extras.
It helps to budget the two separately:
- First-year cost: tuition + application + enrolment or registration + deposit + required support + transport + applicable tax.
- Ongoing annual cost: tuition + recurring support, transport and activities + applicable tax.
Since 1 July 2025, a 6% service tax has applied to private and international school fees for non-Malaysian students where annual fees exceed RM60,000 per student. Each school publishes its own treatment, and they differ. Alice Smith, for example, charges no SST on its normal-day Pre-school fee, while GIS lists its fees excluding SST.
Five schools aren’t enough to set a Klang Valley average, so we haven’t quoted one. Treat the table as a starting point, and ask each school for a full year-one figure.
|
How much are international schools in Kuala Lumpur in 2026? Among the five schools compared here, published 2026/27 tuition runs from about RM36,500 for early years to RM143,400 for upper secondary, before SST where it applies. Year one can cost noticeably more once application, enrolment, deposit and support charges are added. |
|---|
|
Pro Tip: ask each school which year-one charges are refundable, and on what notice, before you accept an offer. |

How Should Your School Shortlist Shape Your Property Search?
Your school shortlist sets the radius of your property search, since each school cluster points to a different part of the Klang Valley.

Primary and secondary campuses are in different locations |

Alice Smith shows why the campus matters more than the school name. Its primary campus is on Jalan Bellamy in Kuala Lumpur, while its secondary campus is in Seri Kembangan. A home that works well for a Year 4 child may be much less convenient by Year 7.
We’d also be wary of any “10 minutes from school” claim. Traffic on a school morning can look very different from a weekend viewing. Test the school run on a weekday at peak hour before you fix the area.
Once the area is clear, check the current foreign-buyer rules before narrowing a property, as thresholds are set state by state.
|
Pro Tip: drive from a shortlisted home to the campus during the weekday morning school run before making an offer. |

When Should You Apply for a 2027 International School Start in Kuala Lumpur?
There’s no single application deadline across Klang Valley international schools, and rolling admission doesn’t guarantee a place.
BSKL accepts applications through the year but uses a waiting list when a year group fills. GIS may place students in a wait pool when eligible applicants exceed places, EAL or Learning Support capacity.
Availability can be tight even a year ahead. When we checked in October 2026, Alice Smith listed Years 11 and 13 as closed for 2027/28, with Years 7 to 10 showing limited spaces.

What Is the Right Decision Order for an MM2H Family?
A six-step order, from child to property, helps MM2H families avoid committing to a home before the school picture is clear.
- Child: confirm age, year group and current curriculum.
- Curriculum: decide which academic pathways remain realistic.
- School shortlist: identify three to five suitable Klang Valley schools.
- Availability and cost: confirm the year group’s admission status and first-year cash commitment.
- Location: narrow to two or three schools and map realistic residential areas.
- Property: only then shortlist homes that fit your lifestyle and current MM2H and foreign-purchase rules.
|
Does “school first” mean enrolling before you look at homes? No. School first means knowing which schools are genuinely realistic before you decide where your family should live. Viewing homes alongside the school search is fine; committing to one before that picture is clear is the part to avoid. |
|---|
|
Pro Tip: keep steps 4 and 5 moving together, since school offers and property decisions often land in the same few months. |

What Do MM2H Parents Ask Most About International Schools in KL?
Can children on MM2H attend international school in Malaysia?
Yes. The MM2H guidelines allow dependants to study in Malaysia, and schools such as ISKL and M’KIS name MM2H families in their admissions and fee policies. Schools still run their own document checks, so confirm what your chosen school needs before enrolment.
How much do international schools in Kuala Lumpur cost in 2026?
Across the five schools compared above, published 2026/27 tuition ranges from about RM36,500 to RM143,400 a year, depending on school and year group. One-off application, enrolment and deposit charges can add significantly to year one.
Is Mont Kiara a good area for international schools?
Mont Kiara is one of the Klang Valley’s notable international-school clusters, home to GIS and M’KIS. It may suit families weighing British or IB pathways, though it won’t be the right base for every family.
Can my child join an international school in KL mid-year?
Some schools accept students during the year or prorate fees, but entry depends on places and school policy. BSKL takes applications year-round, while M’KIS prorates tuition for set joining months.
Should I choose my child’s school before buying an MM2H property?
It usually helps to confirm several realistic schools first. You don’t need to enrol before viewing homes, but knowing your school options makes a long-term property commitment much easier to get right.
So, Where Should an MM2H Family Start?
For MM2H families, the useful question isn’t which international school is best. It’s which schools realistically fit your child’s pathway, start date and budget, and what that means for where you live.
Because the MM2H home generally can’t be sold for 10 years, a few weeks spent on the school shortlist can make the property decision much clearer. Settle the school picture first, then let it guide your search.
